Frequently Asked Questions

What size is best for me?

  • Our dance scarves come in 4 sizes now to suit a wide range of dancers.
  • For people over 5′ 5″ I recommend the 108″ x 45″. This is the standard 3 yd size for dancing and is popular with professionals, beginners and free dancers. The lightweight silk really allows it to float and give ease of movement.
  • For people under 5’5″ I recommend our newest size which is 108″ x 35″. It is really great for smaller dancers who can manage the length but need a shorter width.
  • For children and people who want to wear the silks the 82″ x 45″ size is perfect. Children can use their imagination to make tents, castles and hiding spaces with them and still dance and play with them together. For wearing these make great scarves, sarongs, shawls and light weight travel covers.
  • Our largest size 137″ x 45″ is reserved for special choreography and dance that needs a long lightweight silk. Some meditative movement people also like this size.
  • If you need you can contact me at tamsin@naharisilks.com and I can help you to make the right choice for your needs.
  • For Nahari Silks most here are hand dyed. We set them in a non toxic fixative to set the color but some run off can occur with the stronger deeper colors.
  • We recommend hand washing separately in cold water with a laundry detergent like “Woolite”. To keep the color vivid you can add a rinse in white vinegar, about 1 cup of vinegar to a gallon of water.
  • These days washing machines often have a programme for washing delicate articles at a temperature of 30° – 40°. Provided great care is taken and the above recommendations are followed,
  • If you have several veils it is best to wash them on their own as colors can mix and you can lose the original vibrant color.
  • Silk is like hair and sometimes circumstances cause it to have static.
There are a few ways to handle this.
  • In the hand washing put a small amount of hair conditioner to the second last rinse to make it softer and less prone to static.
  • Hang and steam them either with a steamer or when you take a hot shower hang it in the bathroom for the steam to release the static.
  • If it is sticking to your skin, moisturize your skin with some moisturizer to reduce the static.
  • You can lightly iron the silk before a performance to take out the creases. A hot iron is OK. Just very lightly. We iron them here to get them in the packages while they are slightly damp or dry.
  • Silk is almost like hair in that it gets affected by the air, electricity, care and protection so take good care of it and it will stay lustrous and vibrant.
  • When storing the silk a plastic bag is best so that it is protected from any possible moisture.
  • With accidents like lipstick marks, small rips, oil marks, there is not much you can do except release the disappointment, use it as a practice veil and think about what colors you like your replacement.
  • Because of their versatility you can reuse them in all kinds of ways. Let your imagination run wild.
  • Never expose the silk to bleach. It will literally dissolve it in front of your eyes.
  • Don’t keep it in an area where it is exposed to sun. This will bleach the color and weaken the silk.
  • If these did not answer your questions please email me at tamsin@naharisilks.com” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener noreferrer” style=”box-sizing: border-box; background-color: transparent; touch-action: manipulation; position: relative; color: rgb(247, 159, 227); text-decoration: none;”>tamsin@naharisilks.com and I will do my best to help.

For our silk clothing and accessories that are handcrafted for Nahari Silks we recommend the following.

  • Hand wash in cold water separately with a soft detergent like Woolite, rinse in cold water and then hang dry.
  • Or use the gentle cycle you would use for woolens and then dry in dryer until slightly damp and take out and hang dry.
  • You can iron while they are slightly damp on a low temperature, or steam either by hanging while you have a shower or using a steamer.
  • To store I recommend a plastic bag like the one they ship in to keep it away from other materials or things like lipstick.
  • With care these silks will last a long time and become softer over time.
  • For our hand dyed clothing follow the instructions for silk care for the silk dance scarves.
  • Please contact me at tamsin@naharisilks.com if you need more information.

At Nahari Silks the issue of plastics is a troubling one and so I choose to reuse the bags the silks originally come in to reduce the amount of plastic I use for the silks. My packaging is very basic. My own experience of packaging, even the very lovely packaging, ends up in the garbage so I concentrate on the product to make it as best as I can.

  • The plastic bags that the pieces come in can be reused to protect your pieces from unnecessary accidents with food, makeup, water and the like.
  • For the dance silks the nicest way to store them is to fold them gently into a long strip and then roll them up and place them in a plastic bag or soft material bag. This will reduce the ironing or steaming and reduces any risk of damage or staining.
  • If you need gift wrapping or special notes please contact me at tamsin@naharisilks.com and we can arrange to do it though it will be an extra cost depending how fancy and how fast you need it.
  • The beauty of silk is it is a sustainable and natural product that can last for a long time if taken care of well.

As an artist who hand dyes silks I have had a few conversations with customers who tell me about their own hand dyeing experiences and how they could not get the color right or tone, etc and people also tell me my quality is very high. Here are a few things I think make Nahari Silks really quality silks.

  • My art background was very deep in color and it has helped me over these 20 years of dyeing to seek out color combinations that really work. There is a secret kind of mystical mathematics behind color and when you arrive at the right formula you can create a color that is almost mystical, charismatic, mesmerizing and meaningful on an emotional level to a person. This is what inspires me and what drives me to experiment with dip dyeing. I get inspiration from painters like Rothko, Monet, Titian, Turner, the Persian minaturists, who really touched on how color can move people emotionally.
  • My technique is dip dyeing. It is very simple but you can really learn to understand how colors relate by keeping the technique very limited. Like Rothko he simply stayed in the realm of color to find how it affected the human soul.
  • I am an artist who loves to dance and I have been dancing with the silk veils for over 20 years. It has given me time to understand and experience all the weights and materials people used for dancing. I found the weight really can change and affect the tone and breadth of the dance experience and this weight of silk 5 mm is the most flexible, subtle and responsive silk for dancing. A heavier weight like 8 mm is great for really strong quick dance but for most of us the strength we need in our upper bodies to move the veil needs to be built up slowly.
  • I have taught classes in veil and many people love the lightweight silk because it does not take too much strength to move gracefully with.
  • My studio is in the mountains of New Mexico where the air and skies are clear. This light gives me a really clear perception of the colors I am using, and inspires me with all the beauty I am surrounded by.
  • I really like to make my customers love my veils and I put a lot into making sure what I do is as good as I can make it. I appreciate very much when other businesses treat me well and really you can feel the commitment and respect they have for what they do. I try to bring this to my business because it creates good feeling beyond the colors, the silk and the dance.
  • My dance silks are hemmed on the short side with a very small discreet hem. I don’t feel the need to add more weight to the veil considering the long sides are finished already. The more you move with a veil the more familiar you get with how it feels and how it moves and that is part of the artistry and allows for the dancer to really become accomplished.

Traveling in China and Vietnam gave me a deeper insight into silk, its history, variety and traditions and how it is used.

  • I fell in love with the pajamas. I saw very  dignified old people dressed on the streets in these gorgeous silk pajama like suits and it seemed the most natural thing to be elegant, relaxed and comfortable while you go about daily life.
  • The silk traditions are so various from town to town, province to province and reflect the culture
  • that existed before mass production.
  • In Vietnam I found the Healing the Wounded Heart shop and I found these patterned pajamas that helped people with disabilities make their own living and give them pride and dignity. This seemed like a really nice thing to do to support their small industries and shops instead of going to larger manufacturers.
  • Since I am a small business owner I appreciate what goes into making your small business.
  • The hand crafted silks I offer are well made, rare finds, soft to the skin, beautiful colors and made with care by artisans, craftspeople and disabled people that earn independence through these pieces.
  • Nahari Silks offers hand dyed silks to wholesalers, teachers, groups who wish to order more than 10 pieces.
  • We set up prices according to what you want dyed, the colors needed and blends, and how many.
  • You can order custom pieces and send me photos or inspirations and I can make them for you.
  • You can allow me to choose from what I have in stock and I will select a variety to give you a good  variety of colors.
  • Payment upfront is required by bank transfer once we have agreed on the colors, time frame, price and shipping.
  • For special performances, projects, film, etc please give extra time to ensure I can dye everything and time for any corrections if needed.
  • Some custom colors or patterns are out of my skill set and so I will let you know whether I am able to make them or if you need to find someone who is more suited to the kind of work you need.
  •  I really appreciate feedback positive or negative and we can work together to make it really work the way you have envisioned.

Sometimes I have silks that are slightly damaged, or colors that are unusual. I offer these at a discount to teachers and leaders of groups with special needs. One lady I know works with women who have been sexually abused and they respond well to dancing with the veil. I give her a very good price for these veils to ensure she can continue these classes.

  • If you work with special needs groups and want to veil dance with them please contact me to see if I have any slightly damaged veils available that I can offer at  discounted prices.
